HTTP. I can't really be bothered to set up a HTTPS cert on a dead site ;)

HTTPS is best for any time you're transferring sensitive information - or if you care about privacy with plain-text. I'd probably use it for future sites, but I can't be bothered at this point.

If you have the time? I'd do it.

All of my communities are running on the free virtual SSL certificate that Cloudflare (my CDN) uses

Quite honestly, I don't feel the need to use https unless you're making transactions directly on your site - or have some type of ultra-sensitive content like perhaps political content or other that someone would really go out of their way to tamper with. But other than that, currently I just don't feel a strong need for it on my sites where it's just general public information or transactions being routed to PayPal (and in that case everything would be processed securely through PayPal's https). So again, I really don't feel a need for it right now.

However, I have heard that it does give a tiny boost in searcf rankings, so that's why so many site owners (even non ecommerce sites) have been running to get these certificates left & right. To me, as it stands now, it just sounds like another way that companies use fear and the fear of loss to make us buy into this https trend, because many sites are just not that serious to warrant the cost of https imo.

Normally you'd only use SSL if you needed encryption, however the search engines now are giving preferred rank to SSL sites rather than non-SSL... So, SSL is the way to go.

We do give out free SSL certs to all websites, automatically.

Free SSL certs automatically? I didn't know stablehost did this? I didn't see any promotion about it or anything on your homepage. So how I get mine, is it automatically activated or something?

Hmmm, I see. Well you guys really need some better marketing around this; it's a great free feature! Not only for potential customers, but also for existing customers like me, because I sure didn't know about this and never saw any ad, message or notice to make me aware of this. If I would have never just so happened to join this forum, I probably would have never realized this. Anyways, thanks for this!

P.S. And why do I see the option to purchase SSL certs, if you guys automatically offer them for free? Kinda confusing eh?

Always preferred https. If you are using https you will not get any security issues.

Yes, https is nearly a must, as with it, a website looks more trustworthy. Also, the information goes through a secure connection, which means the customers will be better protected.

Well there are couple major benefits of a HTTPS :

    - Customer information, like credit card numbers, is encrypted and cannot be intercepted
    - Visitors can verify you are a registered business and that you own the domain
    - Customers are more likely to trust and complete purchases from sites that use HTTPS

We're using https on all our sites. It's preferred by the major search engines now a days.

All websites need SSL installation nowadays. It makes your website trusted and secure. Moreover, HTTPS is one of the reference factors of Google ranking algorithm. So any site totally needs it.
